With "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" earning more than $110 million domestically before the stateside premiere of fellow Sony feature "Spider-Man: No Way Home," fans have reason to hope for another sustained multimedia franchise inspired by the first "Ghostbusters" film, which opened on June 8, 1984, and went on to make close to $300 million on a roughly $30 million budget.

It notched top-grossing film status for eight weeks, and the second-highest-grossing rank for six weeks, before returning to the box office top 10 for its two-week re-release in August of 1985.
